What are the differences between double-depth racks and ordinary heavy-duty racks?

Jul 17, 2025

Shelves are a type of rack structure used for storing goods and can offer various combinations based on users' specific needs. Between ordinary heavy-duty shelves and double-depth shelves, which one is more superior?

Heavy-duty shelves, often referred to by industry professionals as beam-type shelves, are meticulously assembled using columns, beams, cross braces, diagonal braces, and self-locking bolts. They effectively prevent stability issues in the shelves caused by loose bolts.

Its main features include:

1. The goods are usually fully loaded using unitization loading equipment such as pallets and storage cages, and then stored on shelves for safekeeping.

2. This type of shelf is the most common and widely adopted among various types, suitable for most warehouse environments and various types of product goods.

3. The handling machinery can reach any storage position to perform storage operations, achieving 100% selectivity, and the operation is simple and fast.

4. Through mechanical storage operations, not only does it improve work efficiency, shorten operation time, but also reduces the labor intensity of employees.

5. The unit span can be designed within 4 meters, the depth within 1.5 meters, and the height of the low-level and high-level shelves can be controlled within 12 meters.

6. Each floor height can be freely adjusted in integer multiples of 75 millimeters to meet the space requirements of different-sized goods.

Double-depth shelves, also known as double-deep racks, are a dense storage solution developed from the traditional beam-type racks. This type of rack adopts a double-row parallel design structure and is used in conjunction with scissor-type forklifts to achieve efficient operation processes. The warehouse space utilization rate is approximately 42%, and the selectivity reaches 50%. The aisle width is customized according to the size of the forklift, and its structure is similar to the adjustable rack. Double-depth racks have been widely applied in various fields such as food and beverage, tobacco, paper industry, and manufacturing due to their advantages of high space utilization and large storage capacity.

Its main features include:

1. The crossbeam design is relatively low, facilitating operation and the operating height can reach 8 meters.

2. Moderate inventory liquidity, providing 50% flexibility.

3. Suitable for warehouse environments with lower picking frequencies, with a ground usage efficiency of up to 42%.

4. Compared to traditional crossbeam shelves, its inventory capacity can be doubled.

5. Approximately 3.3 meters of space needs to be reserved for forklift aisles.

6. It adopts an advanced last-in-first-out access strategy, making it difficult to achieve first-in-first-out.

7. Among all the vertical warehouse systems, the construction cost per rack position is the lowest, making it one of the most cost-effective shelf systems.

So, which is more suitable, the ordinary heavy-duty shelves or the double-depth shelves?

In fact, both have their own advantages. The picking rate of the ordinary heavy-duty shelves can reach 100%, which is convenient for implementing the first-in-first-out storage principle. While the double-depth shelves perform better in terms of space utilization, with a picking rate of approximately 50%, it is more difficult to achieve the first-in-first-out principle.

So, how should users make wise choices?

When choosing a shelf, users need to first clarify their own characteristics and requirements. Only in this way can they select the most suitable shelf type for themselves. Of course, if users encounter difficulties in determining their own needs, we will, from a professional perspective, comprehensively consider the users' characteristics and needs, assist them in choosing the appropriate shelf type, and design a complete storage solution for them.
